Sri Lanka’s Committee on Public Finance has approved a bill to establish a local Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA). For the first time, the country will have a single centralised body to oversee the gaming market.
The meeting reviewing the initiative was held on August 12th under the chairmanship of MP Rauff Hakeem. The Committee has previously discussed the document several times, so the voting session’s results were predictable.
The GRA will be responsible for all formats of the gambling business, including casino and sportsbook projects.
The main objectives and tasks of Sri Lanka’s new body comprise the following:
This legislative decision reinforces the country’s position as a promising entertainment hub for international investors with a strong focus on innovation and quick adaptability to trends.

Lawmakers aim to implement a balanced approach to form a transparent, safe, and attractive ecosystem favourable for both international partners and local stakeholders.
Among those who supported the bill were Chathuranga Abeysinghe, the state’s Deputy Minister, and the following MPs:
A significant number of prominent names among document backers showcase the government’s favourable and rather friendly attitude towards gaming operations.
