Based on the findings of Gambling Research Australia, Australian gambling enthusiasts most often prefer not to set betting limits.
Researchers from the Gambling Experimental Research Laboratory carried out an experiment in which they monitored the players' behaviour for 4 weeks. Of the total participants (3,141), 59% did not set a limit on their bets.
Despite the overwhelming number of people resisting putting a constraint, the 41% that did place a limit claim that it is a very useful tool. Players say that this helped them not to overspend at least once a week. The study shows that more than 30% of the gamblers had set one of the types of restraint during the experiment.
The investigation also points to a low level of understanding of why a limiter is placed, if the participant does so voluntarily. Moreover, both high- and low-risk players are reluctant to put constraints.
The discrete choice poll was aimed at determining the appropriate message for the gamer about setting a limit.
It turned out that the players prefer the language aimed at «management and self-control» rather than the words indicating limitation or improvement.
Nerilee Hing, professor of CQUniversity, claims that among the participants the restrictions on deposits are in demand.
Further in popularity, she notes such limiting tools as:
Australian operators must allow players to set constraints and tell them where to find an overview of these limits. This action of online casino companies will help prevent harm from gambling, as the CQUniversity study shows.
Hing says that 45% of the players that experienced problems with gambling have set at least one type of limit on their bets. However, she argues that the question of people’s resistance to establishing restraints needs to be addressed. It is because more than 50% of gamblers with that issue do not want to accept possible constraining options.
A potential solution to the problem proposed by the professor was the systematisation of communications. This gives participants the ability to react and better understand the borders.
