The president of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, Artur Lira, met with other lawmakers to discuss the issues associated with the regulation of gambling activities.
Arthur Lira, together with Ricardo Barros, head of government in the Chamber, proposed a plan to achieve the quorum necessary to discuss the provisions prepared by the politician Felipe Carreras. This deputy actively promoted the legalisation and regulation of the entire gambling industry in Brazil.
Carreras and Lira have undertaken to consider the bill at the Chamber meeting later this month. According to the President of Congress, almost all key issues have been put to the vote. The exception is some recent amendments made to the text of the document by Felipe Carreras.
The President of the Chamber supports the bill, which is designed to legalise gambling clubs and significantly limit the activities of underground projects. He is ready to fulfil the conditions of the opposition groups to push the new law.
Arthur Lira believes that legislators have done everything possible to pass the bill. The theme of the gambling industry’s legitimisation was discussed in 2021 and in previous years repeatedly. Politicians agreed to make a final decision on this issue at the beginning of 2022.
It is worth noting that even in the event of a successful vote in the Congress of Deputies, the gambling business in Brazil may face a new challenge. Jair Bolsonaro, the country's president, has publicly stated his intentions to veto any law related to the legalisation and regulation of the betting and gaming businesses.
The Chamber may reverse this decision. However, this will require broad support from deputies.
