The Netherlands' government is actively reviewing the ludomania prevention measures to improve the situation in the gambling segment. The current approach is not enough anymore and puts players at risk. Additionally, the system is not as transparent and understandable for operators as it should be.
Regulatory Transition: Reasons and Steps
Franc Weerwind, Democrats 66's politician and the Minister for Legal Protection, noted that the need for changes became obvious after the country’s KSA regulator presented its report. The Minister works on adapting standards to the needs of the market participants and introducing extra rules. He will deliver new norms for consideration at the beginning of 2024. The specialist had a senate meeting where he answered the questions of such national factions:

- Partij voor de Dieren (PvdD).
Many queries were related to the protection of risk player groups. The spokesperson mentioned that 45,787 gamblers registered in the country’s Cruks self-exclusion program in the middle of Summer. A whopping 23% of those people were younger than 25. Thus, the scheme’s awareness needs to be increased.
Operators also want to see alterations to the current regulation. They request clarification of some norms and an equal business environment so that everyone can follow the same requirements.

Along with proposals from the KSA, there will be programs from such brands:
- Trimbos Institute. The organisation is a consultant on addiction issues. It will introduce its campaign of identifying and delivering guidance for potential problematic audiences, especially young people. It is planned for schools to receive recommendations from the Institute in 2024.
- Geldfit. The financial advice agency is elaborating on a project regarding gaming debts for consumers. The solution will be publicly presented in the 1st half of next year.
- Jellinek. This is another ludomania advice centre, which may reorganise its work. Mr Weerwind said that the corporation’s e-learning program for leading specialists was obsolete. Evaluation over the next year will determine whether the scheme needs to be substituted with other measures.
