Asian gambling market: development prospects

A couple of years ago, local land-based establishments generated €17.4 billion in revenue. The gambling segment in the Middle East and Asia accounts for 52% of the global market.

At the event, it was noted that India has been the most successful country in scaling its gambling sector, with the revenues increasing from $60 million to $90 million. However, like many others, the local industry faces certain challenges.

Only 3 jurisdictions were named where wagering is considered legal: Goa, Sikkim, and Daman. It is also allowed to place bets on so-called “games of skill”, such as chess.

Such operators are even permitted to attract investments from abroad. However, those players who win a cash prize cannot take it out of the country.

As for revenues, a significant part of them ends up in the grey market, which in India has become enormous because there are 1.3 billion people living on its territory.

For many years, certain segments of the population and various groups have tried to initiate the legalisation of gaming. They still intend to bring operators and government officials together to discuss the possibility of authorising it. However, such actions have not given positive results so far.

In South Korea, there are 17 casinos that can be visited only by foreign tourists. In Japan, it is planned to legalise betting on sports events, especially since such entertainment is in high demand. However, it is strictly prohibited to play games for money in the region.

In another Asian country, Vietnam, the industry promises to establish a good position, although it is still at an early stage of development. The local authorities have taken a cue from Singapore, whose regulator has already provided valuable advice on this matter.

Vietnam is now considering how much to invest in entertainment resorts with the goal of introducing gaming facilities into them.

Besides the above-mentioned jurisdictions, there are more successful ones. They generate $800 million in annual profit and are located on the border with China. These regions even offer special flights to casinos.

Congress participants noted that social gaming, especially in its mobile version, has become extremely popular in recent years. The number of betting apps is constantly growing. Today, their ratio to all other applications is 8 to 10.

There is also significant capital growth: while this business earned $100 million 2 years ago, it currently reached $150 million, and the sum of $250 million is expected in 12 months.

As for China, proxy gambling, which involves launching digital content with the assistance of a third party, has recently become popular there.

This type of entertainment is not prohibited and is practised in various jurisdictions, such as Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Nepal. There is a situation when people do not need to travel to Macao to visit a casino; they can simply go online and launch a proxy product.

How to Enter the Market

According to industry participants, the niche is very attractive due to:

  • its size and potential;
  • healthy competition;
  • the emergence of new formats.

However, it is quite difficult to enter this market.

According to professional bettor and consultant Patrick Jay, despite positive factors, becoming part of the Asian casino sector will be challenging for any European entrepreneur.

The sweepstakes the expert helped launch were unable to work under the old schemes, as neither his gambling experience nor the knowledge he acquired in the neighbouring countries was useful.

This can be explained by the fact that the mentality, business concepts, language, and culture there are completely different.

At the same time, David Jung, the top manager of the Hero Poker company, notes that to enter the Asian casino market, brands need to thoroughly study the issue, conduct maximum research, and develop a clear strategy.

The specialist believes that Western gaming technologies can help in this matter. It is also worth considering broker support and having ties.

Jung says that the most important thing in business is not the partners, but the assistance of influential persons who can help deal with the difficulties that may appear.
