Spain’s iGaming market has been flourishing throughout recent years. 2023 was also a great period of growth for this European destination. Increasing GGR and marketing expenses underline this success.
Gross Gambling Revenue
The country’s online entertainment segment demonstrates stable evolution in terms of its financial metrics. The local regulator DGOJ reported slightly over € 1.23 billion in GGR for 2023. This is a surge of 28.38% YoY. The uplift became the biggest one starting from 2017. Also, the revenue figure has been increasing yearly since 2013. The only exception was pandemic-affected 2021.
Total depositing and withdrawing operations grew by 15.5% and 10.1% respectively. There were over 1.6 million active gamblers, up by 2.7% YoY, with a monthly average of 1.16 million accounts in use.
GGR results by verticals:
- casino — € 624.8 million (50.52% of the total);
- betting — € 491.8 million (39.77%);
- poker — € 115.3 million (8.52%);
- bingo — € 14.4 million (1.16%);
- contests — € 480,000 (0.04%).
Most of the sectors demonstrated significant growth, increasing hopes for further success. They continue to deliver great figures in 2024. The only exceptions were the bingo vertical, which jumped up slightly by 0.9% and the sphere of contests, showing a 48% decline.
Marketing Expenses
The DGOJ unveiled that these expenditures were up by 7.55% in 2023, signifying further market evolution. The total amount accounted for € 402.8 million.
Distribution of the costs:
- promotions — € 199.9 million (up by 2.8% YoY);
- advertising — € 148 million (9.2%);
- affiliates — € 50.6 million (21.7%);
- sponsorship — € 4.3 million (38.4%).
Inspiring results were obtained despite tightened regulations for marketing in the country. The stricter rules came into force in 2023, spreading to lotteries as well. For instance, gambling-related TV ads are now allowed only in the time gap of 1−5 am. The same addresses the Youtube platform. Also, on social media, gaming managers can share such materials only with their followers.
The new, more harsh limitations were introduced as the local authorities are actively working on further integration of responsible gambling principles. While the overall idea of protecting minors is constructive, it is hard to deny that Spain’s regulations are already among the strictest ones in the whole region.
